The first week of fasting

The first week of fasting

The first week of fasting is over, and I feel so much better. I have been fasting from 8:30 every evening until 6:30pm the following day, giving me a fasting time of 22 hours. When I have eaten it has been a good Paleo diet that I have enjoyed.

I am going to stick to the regime for the next week because it is working, and if its not broken don’t try to mend it as they say.

The training is also going well, I am not working as hard as I used to, but I am training and that’s what counts.

Started Fasting again at last

I have started fasting again after a long break due to illness, now I don’t know if I would have been better off fasting while I was feeling ill and suffering with a mild attack of my MS or eating a reasonable Paleo diet. In the end I decided to eat, but I didn’t manage to keep to the Paleo diet either, when you have depend on other people to prepare your food you cannot expect to have special attention.

Now that I am feeling quite a bit better I can prepare my own food and eat the way that I want to. As for the fasting, I am doing a 24 hour fast with a window for eating that lasts between 6:30 – 8:30 pm each day, when I have completed a week fasting like this I will resume the 36 hour fasts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I will post later on in the week with details of how things are going.

My Weekly Weigh In 29/05/2011

Not only is it my weekly weigh in day but it’s time to have a look at the progress made during the month of May. This has been a good month for weight loss, I managed to lose 8.4lb, not as good as last month, but as my weight goes down I cant expect to lose 10-12lb every month so I am more than happy with the results. My training has been difficult during May due to my work load, but I think the worst is over and I can concentrate on my training a little more in June.

So lets get down to the weekly results:

Age – 55
Height – 72 inch / 1.828 m
Weight – 245.2 lb / 111.22         down 3.0lb
Body fat – 28.9                         down 0.0%
BMI – 33.5                               down 0.1
BMR – 2152                             down 6
Muscle mass – 35.3                  up 0.1%
Body Water – 52.0%                 up 0.2%

With another 3.0lb weight loss that gets me just that bit closer to my target weigh of 196lb only another 49.2lb left to go.

I changed my fasting this week, for full details please go to my post from last week. I am not going to change the fasting routine for at least another week to see how the weight loss is going, then I will reassess things.

I have now lost 13.60% of my body weight since I started this blog and 16.08% since the 1st Jan 2011

New fasting regime

The new fasting regime has started today, instead of fasting all day I now have a small window when I can eat each day, I have set the hours of between 6pm until 9pm as my eating time and I am keeping to this all week rather than having fasting days and eating days. The idea is to keep changing my eating practices so that I don’t get into a routine.

As you would expect, when I do eat I eat a Paleo diet. The first meal on the new regime was Organic Beef Steak and plenty of salad. I enjoy a good salad because I can vary the ingredients quite a bit so that the salad is not just tasty, but has different flavours each time I make one, all you need is a little imagination.

I will keep updating on a regular basis to let you know if the change in routine is affecting me, I am not expecting feeling much difference, but I am just a little worried about the weight loss. In theory fasting this way is just as good as the day on day off method, but time will tell.

My Weekly Weigh In 22/05/2011

It’s been another good week in the weight loss department with my weight going down another 1.4lb. Once again I fasted 3 times, but next week I am going to change my fasting routine, instead of fasting 3 times a week I will only have a small window to eat every day, so I will fast from 9pm each day until 6pm the next day giving me a 3 hour window when I can eat. This is another way of intermittent fasting that will stop my body getting used to a routine, after a couple of week I will change back to the 3 day fasting routine.

OK, so lets get down to the weight loss this week:

Age – 55
Height – 72 inch / 1.828 m
Weight – 248.2 lb / 112.58          down 1.4lb
Body fat – 28.9                          down 0.3%
BMI – 33.6                                down 0.2
BMR – 2158                              down 9
Muscle mass – 35.2                   up 0.0%
Body Water – 52.0%                  up 0.2%

Another 1.4lb weight loss gets me just that bit closer to my target weigh of 196lb only another 52.2lb left to go.

My crossfit training did not go so well this week, the week started off well with 2 very hard sessions, then due to work commitments I had to miss 2 days training. This may not be such a bad thing because I was very tired and the break from training worked well for me.

I have now lost 12.54% of my body weight since I started this blog and 15.06% since the 1st Jan 2011 when I weighed in at 292.2lb

A new week of fasting

I am into a new week of fasting, Monday’s fast is over, and the next fast of the week will start this evening at about 9:30 pm. If this week goes as well as last week I will be overjoyed, and I will be that bit closer to my target weight :)

The training is also going well with 2 good workouts behind me so far and the rest of the workouts already planned for the rest of the week.

So far this year the hay fever has not affected me much, just a little sneezing first thing in the morning, and after I have been up and about for 10 mins it’s all over and done with. My eyes haven’t started itching yet so that’s a blessing, I hate it when I cant wear my contact lenses and have to go back to my glasses :(

I will post later in the week and let you know how the fasting and hay fever is going. I am hoping that the Paleo Diet and fasting may keep the effects of hay fever at bay a little.

My Weekly Weigh In 15/05/2011

It’s been a good week for me, I have managed to get below 18 stone for the first time in years. I have also cracked the 250lb barrier.

With three very good fasts behind me this week and another three planed each week I am hoping to have my target weight insight by the middle of summer.

My crossfit training is going as well, I am planning to spend some time at Crossfit Leeds to get some more training and improve my Olympic Lifts. Some times it can be hard to know if you are getting things right when you train by yourself, and a little input from a good coach can be a big help.

OK, so lets get down to the weight loss this week:

Age – 55
Height – 72 inch / 1.828 m
Weight – 249.6 lb / 113.21        down 2.6lb
Body fat – 29.2                         down 0.2%
BMI – 33.8                                down 0.4
BMR – 2167                               down 17
Muscle mass – 35.2                     up 0.1%
Body Water – 51.8%                   up 0.2%

With another 2.6lb weight loss that gets me just that bit closer to my target weigh of 196lb only another 53.6lb left to go.

As I have said, next week I am planning to fast on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and plan to keep this fasting regime for the foreseeable future, then once I have reached my target weight I will have to review my fasting program.

I have now lost 12.05% of my body weight since I started this blog and 14.58% since the 1st Jan 2011

The fasting is over for the week 14/05/2011

Three fasts this week and a lot of good food on my eating day’s. Monday and Wednesday’s fasting came and went with no problems at all, starting both fasts the evening before at about 9pm and fasting for 36 hours until mid morning. Friday’s fast started on Thursday evening and went through until 4pm today when it ended with a seafood salad and a couple of bananas.

Fasting while at work is cool, no need to pack my lunch or worry about finding Paleo food while I am out and about, and the comments that everyone makes when I tell them that I am on a fast, it’s like I have two heads the way people look at me and then they start making statment’s like, don’t you feel faint or it’s no good for you going without food.

On my eating days I make sure that I prepare food to take with me, usually a salad with chicken, turkey or seafood, red and green peppers to add flavour along with spring onions and a few wallnuts. When I get home I always have a good sized meal with plenty of protein to keep me going for the following days fast.

Tomorrow is once again my weigh day, and I have done very well with the diet this week so I hoping for a good result.

This week is another 1.4lb reduction in weight, this is a good result taking into account that I have started back to work after the holidays. So lets get down to the results

Age – 55
Height – 72 inch / 1.828 m
Weight – 252.2 lb / 117.57        down 1.4lb
Body fat – 29.4                         down 0.3%
BMI – 34.2                                down 0.1
BMR – 2184                               down 83
Muscle mass – 35.1                     up 0.1%
Body Water – 51.6%                   up 0.1%

That is another 1.4lb closer to my target weigh of 196lb only another 56.2lb left to go.

The final fast of the week is over

That’s it, the fasting for this week is over, I managed to complete 3 fasts this week, and the last fast was the longest, I fasted from 9 pm on Thursday until 3 pm today (Saturday) that’s a total of 42 hours. Now I didn’t find the fasting hard at all this week, there was the odd time when I felt a little peckish but the feeling soon passed. I find the main thing to do when I feel the need to eat is to keep myself busy.

Even though I was fasting I still went to the gym and trained this morning. It’s surprising how many people that know that I’m fasting pass comment on training pass comment and cannot believe that it is still possible to train hard without having had food for over 36 hours. I try and make people understand that fasting is
a: Good for you.
b: Not hard if you eat cleanly on none fasting days.
c: It does not affect your training if you are fasting.

I find that the secret in fasting is to eat good food building up to the fast, and start your first fast off nice and gentle with some thing like a 18 – 24 hour fast. Start your fast when you are ready for bed and then you will sleep the first few hours, try and keep yourself occupied and stress free if you can. After your first fast it’s up to you if you want to try a longer fast or just keep to the 18 – 24 hours. Try and get to understand how your body feels during a fast, the first time can be a little strange, just stick with it and you will get through. After your first 2 or 3 times it will start to get easier and then if you want you can either fast for longer or more frequently.

Tomorrow is the day to record my weight, I am hoping for good results again this week :)
